Angelina Jolie in talks to play Lady Macbeth-esque SERENA for Darren Aronofsky

Angelina Jolie going Lady Macbeth evil for Darren Aronofsky(The Wrestler, Requiem for a Dream) in a 19th century period drama that some are predicting to be the director's There Will Be Blood? I'm in - no questions asked. Titled Serena, the movie is based on Ron Rash's 2008 period yarn "Serena: A Novel" say The Hollywood Reporter and if it finds the financing it needs and indeed gets made, Jolie will be Oscar nominated. If she isn't, she will royally screwed up the potential this role offers her...

Set in the rugged mountains of 1929 North Carolina, "Serena" follows a man named George Pemberton and his new bride, Serena, as they create a timber empire. Serena not only takes to the woods, but she also pushes her husband to commit more and more ruthless acts. When she learns she cannot bear a child, Serena sets out to murder the son her husband fathered illegitimately.

Jolie has a great CV of dramatic roles which you sometimes forget when you see her splashed on billboards as an action hero. Oscar nominated last year for her brilliant performance in The Changeling, and her best work to date coming just a year previous in the harshly overlooked A Mighty Heart - where she delved deeper into her acting soul in what felt like a personal movie to her. This role sounds like the center stage, an Oscar extravaganza that every actress desperately seeks but so few are given the chance to play these days. Serena has been written for the screen by Chris Kyle (Alexander, K-19: The Widowmaker), and produced by the man who brought The Time Traveler's Wife and The Road to the dance. Of course a movie with an A-list star like her attached is sure to get financing without any trouble at all, so as long as she doesn't get distracted by something else (she can make pretty much any movie she wants these days) then this could be the next project for both.
