Casting Harry Potter TV Show Reboot
14. Dudley Dursley - Ferdia Shaw
Let's get this one out of the way off the bat: the Artemis Fowl movie is awful. AWFUL. It butchers the source material, it whitewashes Holly Short, it completely misjudges how to depict Artemis and Butler is not the character from the book.
And breathe.
All of that said, Ferdia Shaw is not responsible for the failings of the script. In fact, the young Irish actor delivered a fairly solid performance in the movie, even if he wasn't able to make the character as unlikeable as his literary inspiration. The surfboarding Artemis of the movie is a far cry from the computer-screen bleached digital vampire of the novels.
Shaw, who is the grandson of legendary actor Robert Shaw, needs to embody the spoiled snark of Harry's odious cousin Dudley Dursley. The fact is, Shaw has the chops to do it. Dudley is a hard role to cast and Harry Melling did a great job. Again, looking at the course of the films, there needs to be an actor in the role who can show character development.
While Dudley isn't the biggest part in the films, he is a key nemesis for Harry in his home life. He's a nasty young boy, though, oddly, he ends up as the one character in the family who out and out states he doesn't want Harry to die. Again, with the characterisation that Shaw has managed to show in his short career, he would be more than able to take this role and make it work.
