Sequels don't get a whole lot stranger or more surprising than this.

In case you haven't heard of it, Troop Beverly Hills is a 1989 adventure comedy starring Shelley Long as a Beverly Hills housewife who defies expectations by becoming the den mother to a troop of Girl Scouts.

Though Troop Beverly Hills certainly has its fans, the film was ultimately a critical and commercial failure, so even its most ardent cheerleaders surely weren't ever expecting a follow-up.

But it was recently announced that Cameron Diaz is currently developing a sequel which she's set to both produce and star in, while Clea DuVall will write and direct.

From what little we know so far, this will most likely be more of a soft reboot than a legacy sequel, especially with Shelley Long having basically retired from acting these days.

All the same, no matter how it turns out, nobody saw this sequel announcement coming.
