20 Most Divisive Movie Scenes Ever

13. The Trinity Test - Oppenheimer

Though Christopher Nolan's Oppenheimer was widely praised by critics and audiences alike, as well as winning the Best Picture Oscar, somewhat ironically its most debated scene was the focal Trinity test itself.

Considering how extensively the sequence had been hyped up pre-release, with Nolan and his team assuring audiences that the nuclear test was realised practically without VFX trickery, folk certainly expected quite the spectacle of tactile effects.

And while many were indeed dazzled by the grandeur of the detonation as the payoff to two hours of build-up, others were left with a deflated feeling of, "Is that it?"

Though the sound portion of the sequence was basically peerless, many found the visual aspect of the explosion quite benign, basically showcasing the limitations of trying to do it all in-camera.

You can certainly argue that everything either side of the explosion is so much more important, but even so, there's an argument to be made that Nolan would've been smart to employ some digital finessing here.
