12. Brad Pitt's Cameo - 12 Years a Slave

Steve McQueen's 12 Years a Slave is one of the most acclaimed films of the 21st century, though audiences just can't agree on whether Brad Pitt's cameo as Canadian abolitionist Samuel Bass works or not.

Pitt rocks up for a brief cameo late in the movie, and though Pitt's performance in the scene is absolutely rock solid, to many it was a distraction to see a bonafide A-lister show up as a minor character - and one of the few virtuous white ones in the film no less.

Yet there are also those who simply appreciate that Pitt gave a strong performance in the scene as well as the practical aspect of his involvement. 

Pitt himself admitted that, as a producer, he took a small acting role in the film to help the project get more financial backing.

Is Pitt's presence distracting? Yes, but if it ultimately helped 12 Years a Slave become the brilliant film it was, then it was surely worth it.
