20. Titane

Even if you haven't seen Titane, there's a good chance you know it as that film where a woman shags a car, which while not inaccurate is really just the tip of the story's iceberg.

Agathe Rousselle stars as Alexia, a woman who has a titanium plate in her head from a childhood car accident and takes a peculiar sexual interest in automobiles, which eventually results in her getting pregnant (!).

Oh, and because this isn't insane enough, Alexia is also a serial killer.

As much of a Mad Lib as this all appears to be, filmmaker Julia Ducournau impressively manages to weave it all into a transfixing and even unexpectedly affecting whole - an achievement which even won the film the Cannes Film Festival's coveted Palme d'Or.

It's absolutely a film set to rub some people the wrong way, but Ducournau's materially strange and bizarrely tender treatment is one of the most compellingly odd horrors of recent times.
