19. Possessor

Possessor, the second feature from David Cronenberg's son Brandon, confirmed beyond any doubt that the apple didn't fall far from the tree, serving up one hell of a twisted sci-fi horror tale.

Andrea Riseborough is stunning as Tasya Vos, an assassin who hijacks other people's bodies in order to carry out her hits, using a mysterious technology to temporarily transfer her consciousness into theirs.

That's a plenty provocative premise on its own, but Cronenberg dares to take it further by examining the wider physical and psychological effects of the tech on Tasya, as she begins to dissociate from her own identity in dangerously unpredictable ways.

Much like his father, Brandon demonstrates a disquieting aptitude for both body horror and queasily surreal imagery, matching the bursts of nauseating violence with hypnotically unnerving visuals.

The entire supporting cast is terrific - especially the ever-great Christopher Abbott - but it's Riseborough whose powerful work digs deep into the dark heart of the central consciousness-hopping premise.
