20 Most WTF Horror Movies Of The 2020s (So Far)
2. Lamb
Even for the free-wheeling standards of folk horror, Lamb is one of the most insane horrors of the last few years, centered around an Icelandic couple who discover that one of their sheep has birthed a human-sheep hybrid, which they promptly adopt as their own.
But Lamb is far more than weird for mere weird's sake - the central couple's peculiar decision is underlined by their grief at losing their own child, which despite the surreal throughline is richly realised here through Noomi Rapace and Hilmir Snær Guðnason's terrific performances.
The human-sheep effects are also startlingly impressive, lending credibility to a concept that could so easily fall apart with lesser execution.
Filmmaker Valdimar Jóhannsson's slow, uneasy approach continually builds gut-wrenching dread from one scene to the next, leading to a grim shocker of a climax that somehow elevates the entire experience into something even stranger and more profoundly sad.
