20 Most WTF Horror Movies Of The 2020s (So Far)

13. Crimes of the Future

Crimes of the Future was David Cronenberg's first film in almost a full decade following 2014's Maps to the Stars, and boy, it sure is a weird one even for his wild standards.

The movie is set in a dystopian future where physical pain and infectious diseases have largely been eradicated, and certain people experience peculiar physical evolutions, such as spontaneously growing new organs inside their body.

It's not unfair to say that Crimes of the Future feels like a homage to many of Cronenberg's most beloved films - namely Videodrome, Crash, The Fly, Eastern Promises, and The Dead Zone - but it nevertheless offers up a compelling singular vision for humanity's ever-growing fusion with technology, and what that could look like long-term.

It also goes without saying that the central performances from Viggo Mortensen, Léa Seydoux, and Kristen Stewart are as committed-to-the-bit as one could reasonably expect.

While not one of Cronenberg's very best films, it does prove that he's still got a penchant for queasy discomfort even in his twilight years.
