Justice League Dark - or Dark Universe, if you prefer - is one of those projects that's been teased for years but has never seemed to make any headway. Since writer/director Guillermo del Toro first announced that he was working on the project, the buzz has only continued to grow in spite of it never really going anywhere.

Fortunately, the last few months have seen a lot of forward momentum on the project, with the announcement that Michael Gilio would be taking over screenwriting duties from del Toro, who still provided the story, and that Doug Liman would be directing. Warner Bros. seems pretty serious in making the film happen, and that's a good thing, as such a story involving magic, the occult, and so on is a solid way to push the borders of the DCEU that much further and diversify the lineup.

Characters like John Constantine, Zatanna, Deadman, Etrigan, and Swamp Thing couldn't be any further from characters like Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, and The Flash, which will go a long way in helping the film truly feel fresh within the ever-expanding franchise, and its success - even more so, perhaps, than Suicide Squad - could open the door for more risk-taking on behalf of Warner Bros. in tapping even deeper into DC's storied history, turning lesser-known characters into household names if treated with the respect they deserve.
