In an attempt to stop Russell killing the orphanage's headmaster, Deadpool willingly wears a power-suppressing collar, offering his own life in place of the headmaster's.

It's all for nought, as Cable takes fire at Russell anyway, prompting 'Pool to dive in front of the bullet, mortally wounding himself in order to save Russell.

Russell loses his taste for vengeance after witnessing Deadpool's sacrifice, and after a prolonged, "Oscar-worthy" death scene, Wade finally appears to expire. He meets Vanessa in the after-life, but she tells him that he's still not ready to die for keeps.

At that moment, Cable uses his final time travel opportunity to save Wade's life, placing his prized skee-ball token in front of his heart, which deflects the bullet this time while still altering Russell's fate, and therefore also saving Cable's family.

Though Deadpool "dying" doesn't really mean much on a dramatic level, the filmmakers smartly went in the opposite direction and made it a prolonged, ridiculous joke. Bravo.
