20 Most Disappointing Horror Movies of the 2020s (So Far)

16. The Mortuary Assistant

With Hollywood now finally taking video games seriously, we're going to get less mainstream, more niche games get their own movies, and on paper the indie horror game The Mortuary Assistant seemed like a pretty damn great fit for the cinematic treatment.

A demonic possession story set in a mortuary should translate pretty well from video game to movie, and though there's plenty of talent here - namely lead actors Willa Holland and Paul Sparks - The Mortuary Assistant is ultimately a sleeping pill in film form.

Though well shot and solidly acted, there's maddeningly little narrative meat on them bones, and worst of all the atmosphere isn't a fraction as spooky as the source material.

It's a slog to sit through at even just 91 minutes, and so you're better off watching The Autopsy of Jane Doe instead - a film which pulled off a similar concept years before The Mortuary Assistant game was even released.
