15. Shelby Oaks

It always hurts to see a genuine passion project fall far short of the mark.

Shelby Oaks was the feature directorial debut of hugely popular YouTube film critic Chris Stuckmann - a supernatural horror film he'd been developing for years prior to its release last summer.

Thanks to Stuckmann's platform as a critic it became the most crowd-funded horror film in Kickstarter history, and with Neon coming on board as a distributor and genre legend Mike Flanagan joining as an executive producer, it truly seemed like horror's next big auteur had arrived.

Shelby Oaks was by no means terrible, but it was a rather middling letdown - a film which kicks off with a promising found footage setup only to transition into a decidedly more familiar and forgettable conventional horror movie.

The third act in particular is full of issues, all of which conspire to end the film on a wildly deflating note despite its earlier promise.

Stuckmann clearly has some skill as a filmmaker, though might want to work with a more experienced screenwriter in future to help punch up his ideas.
