Over the summer, it seemed like The Big Sick was going to be the year's big indie Oscar contender, with expected nominations for Best Picture and Holly Hunter's fantastic supporting performance in the very least.

Sadly, the hype cooled in the second half of the year and the film has been left with just a single nomination, despite being one of 2018's most charming comedies and an impressively expectation-defying rom-com.

As writer and star, Kumail Nanjiani draws from his own life to deliver a highly moving, hilarious tale centered on the awkwardness of culture clashes and basic human fragility. It's also got an all-timer 9/11 joke, if that's your thing.
