9. The Age Of Innocence (1993)

A meticulously-mounted period drama coming from Martin Scorsese of all directors, The Age of Innocence melds the legendary filmmaker's cutting-edge filmmaking style with the stodgy mores of the late 19th century to bewilderingly powerful effect.

What it lacks in Scorsese's characteristic blood-letting it more than compensates with its severe emotional brutality. DDL is fantastically tortured here as young lawyer Newland Archer, alongside an arguably never-better Winona Ryder and Michelle Pfeiffer.

Sumptuously capturing the devastating spirit of Edith Wharton's 1920 novel, this is a top-tier Scorsese joint that also boasts one of DDL's more under-appreciated performances. Even if you find period fare typically "boring", this one's a must-see.
