At least a good six years after there was first strong demand, Marvel Studios have finally committed to making a movie about Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff.

Set to be a prequel, it’s a case of better late than never. Black Widow remains a fascinating enigma of a character, and there’s lots a solo movie can explore about the red in her ledger, Budapest and so on.

The MCU works best when it gets to do proper genre films within its universe, and this can allow it to go full spy thriller. With Johansson in the lead, Cate Shortland directing, and those MCU touches, there’s a heck of a lot of potential here - they just need to give us a release date (it’s presumably going to be 2020).
