Given the success of Spider-Man Into The Spider-Verse (at least among die-hard Spider-Man fans) and the popularity of Spider-Gwen, it's no real surprise that Sony are pushing for more female characters in their future. And while they've avoided going for a live action Spider-Gwen for now, Silk can occupy the same sort of space.
Announced in June 2018, the film spin-off that will centre on Korean-American superheroine Cindy Moon was revealed as seeking a writing team. She was created by Dan Slott relatively recently (2014, in fact) as another student bitten by a radioactive spider on the same school trip who inherits very similar powers.
As a means to appeal to the key younger female demographic in the same way Spider-Man movies appeal to younger boys, it's a smart move to give her her own movie.
