The Lone Ranger star might currently be suffering slightly from the effects of that box office flop, but he should recover fully to have a great career. He is around the right age, and has the physical presence to really lead films, which would have been perfect for Christian Grey. He might not yet have shown the darker side to his on-screen persona, but his almost classical, Golden Age appeal would have brought something authentic and utterly convincing to the role. There is definitely something of Clark Gable and his type of swaggering leading man, from before the dawn of sexual equality in movies, and Hammer is arguably the closest actor currently working who has that same sort of essence. In Hammer's hands Grey could have been alouf and charming at the same time, and there was enough in his Social Network performances to show that he could capture the dark side of the character. He might not have been everyone's choice, but Hammer's presence, and his ability to convince in a broad range of roles so far is enough to convince that he could have handled the role exceptionally well.
