The screenplay bounces between the two distinct tones without much subtlety at all throughout, which may leave audiences reeling a little from mood whiplash.

In one moment we might see Finch stumble across a decomposing corpse, only for some goofy slapstick to abound moments later.

The grimmer apocalyptic elements don't always mesh comfortably with the sillier robot shenanigans, and a sometimes overwrought musical score from Oscar-winning composer Gustavo Santaolalla doesn't much help.

While this isn't a deal breaker, the film's inability to commit to a clear mood, or at least move between them with gradual grace, may throw some viewers for a loop.
