Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3: Everything We Know

The sequel is back on track.

It's almost unheard of for a movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to suffer any significant production troubles, an admirable trait considering the number of other blockbuster movies that have struggled in recent memory, from Justice League's CGI moustache woes to Solo's fired directors.

This made it all the more surprising when the MCU took a major hit last summer, when James Gunn - writer-director of Guardians Of The Galaxy and its sequel - was removed from the third film. At this point, we already knew that Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3 was coming, but Gunn's firing threw up many big hurdles for the project, not least of which being the question of whether or not it was still going to happen.

But now, those doubts can be put to bed: Gunn is back, and Guardians 3 is in safe hands once again.

There's still a lot of mystery surrounding it, but with two movies in the can and a ton of hints being dropped by the filmmakers over the years, we already know a good amount about the project, including what it might mean for the MCU's cosmic future.

8. James Gunn Will Write And Direct

Guardians 3 was moving along quite smoothly until it hit a major roadblock in July 2018, when franchise spearhead James Gunn was removed from the project.

After a series of inappropriate decade-old tweets began to do the rounds, Disney fired Gunn in an instant, sending shockwaves through the online film community and leaving the future of Guardians 3 looking uncertain.

But now, things are looking bright once again. On 15 March 2019, Gunn was officially reinstated as the director of the movie, a decision that - according to Deadline, who first broke the story - was made months ago, after Disney execs were persuaded by Gunn's public Twitter apology, and the way he accepted his initial firing in a calm and collected manner.

Why did it take so long for this news to come out if the decision was made a while ago? We don't know. Perhaps Disney and Marvel wanted to focus on launching Captain Marvel successfully, before dropping a major, attention-diverting bombshell like this. Whatever the case, Gunn is back behind the camera - for good, this time - on Guardians 3.
