17. Wildwood

While there's absolutely reason to be concerned about the box office performance of Laika's new stop-motion animation Wildwood, at least with the studio being bankrolled by Nike co-founder Phil Knight that's an evidently secondary concern to just making great art.

And from what we've seen and heard so far, Wildwood just might be Laika's magnum opus - an almost impossibly ambitious attempt to give stop-motion its own massive blockbuster to rule them all.

With a beefy 140-minute runtime and surprise PG-13 rating, Wildwood appears to be an utterly uncompromising adaptation of Colin Meloy and Carson Ellis' beloved 2011 fantasy novel, which is itself a hefty 541-page behemoth.

Combine this fearless approach with Laika's mind-bogglingly fluid animation - so pristine, in fact, that it scarcely looks like stop-motion at all - and it seems nigh-on impossible for Wildwood to be anything less than one of the grandest, most impressive artistic swings the animated medium has ever seen.
