On a more positive note, Fox didn't go out and hire a commercial or music video director on the cheap to helm a quickie sequel. Instead, the man who lensed the original is back, and he has a lot of motivation for this to be a success. In fact, if you were to put a number on it, his motivation level should probably be somewhere around 2012. 2012 was, of course, 2009's horrible disaster outing helmed by Emmerich, which followed 2004's rather silly The Day After Tomorrow and 2008's 10,000 B.C. That's quite a few missteps to make up for - and that doesn't even cover the fact that he's the man responsible for the 1998 version of Godzilla. He bounced back somewhat with White House Down, but that got lost in the mix with the similar (and also decent) Olympus Has Fallen, so Emmerich is really looking for a hit here.
