Jumping The Shark: 9 Franchise Derailing Films
3. Star Trek V: The Final Frontier
In this film the crew of the Enterprise fights God. Well, a nearly omnipotent Alien -- but still. William Shatner decided to direct the fifth installment of the Star Trek film series and transformed it into an ode to his Mount Everest-sized ego. Shatner co-conceived the story wherein the Enterprise, held hostage by Spock's evil brother, travels to the centre of the universe to rescue an alien alleging to be God Almighty. Shatner himself puts the stupidity of this concept best when an incredulous Kirk asks "Why does God need a starship?". Needless to say Kirk defeats God and the crew flies off to boldly go where no man has gone before.
The hostile reaction of fans, coupled with a disappointing box-office return almost killed the Star Trek Film series. Luckily, Star Trek 6: The Undiscovered Country fared better.
