Jumping The Shark: 9 Franchise Derailing Films
2. Batman & Robin
Many would say Batman Forever jumped the Batman shark but it was the soul-crushing failure of 1997's Batman and Robin that almost put the final nail in Batman's cinematic coffin. This film's crimes against art have been well-documented ad nauseam. For fans of the comedy of discomfort I highly recommend watching the film with the director's commentary on. An audibly hostile Joel Schumacher diverts blame for his legendary misfire to the producers who pressured him to make the picture more "toyetic": a film industry term used to measure how suitable a movie is for merchandising spin-offs such as action figures and video games. How this influenced Schumacher's decision to add nipples and a codpiece to a visibly embarrassed George Clooney's bat-suit is left to our imagination.
