Before Jason Reitman showcases his next directorial effort Young Adult to us at the end of the year, his black comedy drama reunion with Juno writer Diablo Comedy that stars Charlize Theron, Patrick Wilson and Patton Oswalt - the work-a-holic has already setup what his next film will be. EW reports that Reitman has cast Kate Winslet and Josh Brolin to topline Labor Day, an adaptation of Joyce Manard's 2009 novel that's described as 'part love story, part coming-of-age tale, part thriller' that will shoot next year in New England.
Set in the early 80s over the late summer holiday weekend, Labor Day opens with divorced, depressed single mom Adele clothes shopping with her 13-year-old son Henry, who encounters a large, fearsome man who also happens to be bleeding badly. He asks for a ride, and against all judgment, they give him one. Are they hostages, accomplices or just deluded? As police search town for the escaped convict, the mother and son gradually learn his true story as their options become more and more limited.
Does this news story really need anymore text? Two of the best actors of their respective sexes working today with Reitman whose movies are somehow getting better each time (Thank You For Smoking, Juno, Up in the Air) and with a story that already has me hooked and wanting to go out and by the book - this one immediately is on our radar. Can we hope for a falls season 2012 release prime for Oscar contention? Let's hope so.
