In 2001, Michael Perry and Jason Burkett, fuelled by drink and drugs, murdered a housewife, her son and his friend for no real reason other than stealing a car. This film takes place during the days that lead up to Michael Perry's execution. Into the Abyss is the exception to the rule of this list. It doesn't actually confront whether or not the perpetrators featured in the film are innocent or guilty. It's actually about confronting the reality of a senseless murder and the eventuality of further lives being taken, only this time by the state. Herzog has always been a firm opponent of capital punishment, but you can expect a well balanced and unbiased examination here that will leave you heavy with sadness. Where can you see it?
