20 Awesome Recent Horror Movies That Flopped At The Box Office

3. Ick

There are few currencies more powerful than nostalgia, and so Joseph Kahn's new horror-comedy Ick had a whole ton of potential on paper.

This glorious homage to turn-of-the-century horror classic The Faculty, complete with early-aughts needle-drops and the cannily cast Brandon Routh and Mena Suvari, managed to perfectly exploit burgeoning nostalgia for the 2000s.

But what can even be said here? Fathom Entertainment gave the film an extremely limited theatrical release, enough that its box office grosses weren't even reported.

And considering both the cast and the film's effects-heavy nature, there was evidently no path for it to turn a profit theatrically.

One can hope it'll clean up on streaming, yet despite how ludicrously entertaining the movie is, it seems that producers may have over-estimated the general appeal of a creature feature aimed at millennials.

That said, don't be surprised if Ick is held up as an underappreciated cult classic in the years to come.
