20 Awesome Recent Horror Movies That Flopped At The Box Office
2. 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple
28 Years Later: The Bone Temple was an absolute blast, delivering a more consistent and engrossing follow-up to last year's somewhat polarising third entry into the franchise.
While 28 Years Later grossed more than $150 million last summer, it's also fair to say that the film's wildly divisive, mainstream-alienating ending ensured that this follow-up started out on the back foot and basically never recovered.
On a budget of $63 million, The Bone Temple has only barely passed the $50 million mark to date, falling far short of industry projections and making it the first notable franchise flop of 2026.
Given that the film's "A-" CinemaScore suggests that most people who did see it enjoyed themselves, it's clearly a case of this sequel paying for the "sins" of its more out-there predecessor - as well as the historically fallow January release window - even though it was ironically better-received by both critics and fans alike.
The big tragedy, of course, is that this brutal underperformance leaves fans worried that the planned third 28 Years Later film won't come to fruition.
We can only hope that VOD sales and the series' general popularity compels Sony to greenlight it regardless.
