20. Silent Night, Deadly Night

While you might not be in the Christmas mood right now, you absolutely shouldn't sleep on last year's reimagining of Silent Night, Deadly Night this coming Yuletide season.

Now in fairness, Cineverse basically sent this one out to die, but as remakes of infamous cult horror films go, it's a shockingly well-made effort that in many respects improves upon its controversial source material.

Though the new Silent Night, Deadly Night isn't nearly as abrasive or vulgar as its predecessor - and makes a crucial change of having the Santa suit-wearing serial killer largely target Bad People - it is a far more cohesive film in terms of its characterisation and overall storytelling.

The kills are great, Rohan Campbell is terrific in the lead role, and he's got great chemistry with Ruby Modine's love interest.

But best of all? It fearlessly introduces a riotous supernatural element that wasn't in the original - and against tremendous odds, it actually works.
