4. Undertone

Ian Tuason's vibes-rich feature debut Undertone may not have set the box office alight, but it did gross an impressive $21.6 million against a budget of just $500,000, after which Tuason was poached to direct the next entry into the Paranormal Activity franchise.

And while his debut was seemingly mounted as a standalone, one-off project, it nevertheless left many compelling narrative threads hanging - particularly the story of Mike and Jessa, the couple whose paranormal recordings were sent to podcaster protagonist Evy (Nina Kiri).

However, during press for the film, Tuason revealed that he actually has ambitions to produce a trilogy of Undertone films, with the second film intended to tell Mike and Jessa's story.

Nothing is greenlit yet despite the first film's minor commercial success, though Tuason said that he's currently talking to A24 about the possibility of both Undertone 2 and 3. Given the bracingly effective low-fi chills of the first film, it can't come soon enough.
