4. St. Elmo's Fire 2

Though it was modestly successful at the box office, St. Elmo's Fire wasn't one of the '80s more iconic or enduring coming-of-age dramas, and is frankly best remembered for how stupendously stacked its ensemble cast was, including the rising likes of Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, Emilio Estevez, Ally Sheedy, Judd Nelson, Mare Winningham, and Andie MacDowell.

In 2009 a TV series entered development but never made it before cameras, seeming to confirm that this IP just didn't have the juice for the franchise treatment.

And even though a sequel was announced in 2024 with most key cast members set to return, many expressed skepticism that it would ever actually get made considering how little cultural cachet the original film has today.

But last year Rob Lowe confirmed that the sequel was still in development, and provided a more emphatic update this past June, that the cast is committed to making the film once the script is in satisfactory shape.
