Despite being near-universally panned by critics, the first two Grown Ups movies have grossed more than $500 million worldwide collectively, so it's genuinely surprising that Sony didn't get a third film going in short order.

And considering that Grown Ups 2 came out way back in 2013, it well and truly seemed like the time for another sequel had passed, especially with the theatrical comedy landscape being so much trickier today.

Yet back in May, Netflix confirmed that they were partnering with Adam Sandler on a belated Grown Ups 3, with Happy Gilmore 2 filmmaker Kyle Newacheck tapped to direct.

Given that the Grown Ups films regularly chart highly on Netflix and the streamer has an ongoing deal with Sandler to produce his movies, it makes all the sense in the world that Grown Ups 3 would forego a theatrical release entirely, even if most fans had long since given up on it ever happening.
