Ella McCay was the first film from legendary filmmaker James L. Brooks since 2010's mega-flop How Do You Know?, and while this alone perhaps suggested that the Terms of Endearment writer-director had lost his touch, the marketing for his new film seemed to confirm it.

In every fiber of its being, Ella McCay was presented as a film that tripped and fell straight out of 2002.

Though we don't know for sure when it was written, one could hazard a guess the script spent a solid 20 years collecting dust in Brooks' desk before he got it before cameras.

This political dramedy about a young governor (Emma Mackey) juggling her professional and personal life is every bit the cloying, gooey, melodramatic misfire it was sold to audiences as - but worse than that, it's just intensely dull for most of its 115 minutes.

The only thing less surprising than it not being very good? The fact that it was a gigantic box office bomb, netting just $5 million worldwide on a $35 million budget.
