Oscars 2014: 17 Unfair Snubs The Academy Got Completely Wrong

By Jack Pooley /

11 & 10. The Great Gatsby & American Hustle €“ Best Makeup & Hairstyling

The Great Gatsby is another film I'm not at all high on, but I can appreciate the commitment of the crafts services to the regal production. It should have been a shoo-in for a Makeup & Hairstyling nomination to sit alongside its nod for Costume Design, yet the long-time tradition of the branch to merely nominate three candidates no doubt resulted in Gatsby being passed over for...Jackass: Bad Grandpa and, erm, The Lone Ranger. Granted, the first one's a pretty cute surprise, but The Lone Ranger? Even putting the film's quality out of mind, was it really a more remarkable job than that needed to make everyone look so slick and dapper in Gatsby? I won't be crying over this one, and it's in a category so few people actually passionately care about, but this was the film's rare chance to shine, and it's been denied.
