Oscars 2014: 10 Hopeful Best Picture Contenders

Chance: The Darkest Horse Last, but not least, I present to you all the darkest horse of the 2014 Oscar race. Yes, it's been nominated for a Golden Globe in the Best Picture - Comedy category; but the concept of the film might be a little too high to win a coalition of votes big enough for nomination. If that wasn't bad enough, this film technically counts as a sci-fi picture, which has almost always been discriminated against in the Academy's history. Don't believe me? Ask Avatar, District, or Star Wars, and they'll tell you the same. While most movies on this list have theoretical silver linings of sorts, be it a slew of technical awards or even impressive writing/acting nomination combos, this film seems to be the one that has the most against it. The Golden Globes (and most likely The Academy as well) turned their back on the prospect of Scarlett Johansson being the first Actress nominated for a role that is devoid of actual stage presence, and Joaquin Phoenix still has some work to do before he rehabilitates his image completely, thanks to his "prank" he pulled on the world a couple of years back. At most, this will probably gain a token Best Original Screenplay, and maybe a Best Original Song nomination. What say you, What Culture readers? Are there any dark horses you're pulling for? Do you think there's still some surprise left in the race? Is Leo going to go home golden this year? Comments away!
