Shyamalan's back, baby.

Before we forget 2016 completely, the first month of January is typically a busy catch-up period, with all those buzzed-about awards releases finally hitting UK screens, alongside the usual glut of low-effort January sledge, such as undemanding horror flicks and lame actioners.

Thankfully there's not too long to wait until 2017 comes out in full force, what with February touting the promising likes of The Lego Batman Movie, John Wick Chapter 2, The Great Wall and A Cure for Wellness. It's also got new entries into the Resident Evil, The Ring and Fifty Shades franchises, but you can't win them all, right?

Whether you soaked in all those pics vying for big gold statues or subjected yourself to some gloriously trashy B-movies, here are January 2017's movies ranked from worst to best...

17. The Bye Bye Man

RottenTomatoes Score: 22% (3.5/10 average score)

Box Office: Made for a modest $7.4 million, the horror flick has grossed a solid $24 million to date. Not a breakout horror smash, but probably enough to guarantee a sequel.

Verdict: Well, it's not quite as terrible as most expected it to be, but despite a few good ideas, The Bye Bye Man is a mostly slack, frequently unintentionally hilarious PG-13 horror romp with poor direction and incredulous appearances from Oscar winner Faye Dunaway and Carrie-Anne Moss.

With a stronger script and a more skilled filmmaker at the helm, this could've been surprisingly good, but instead it settles for "not quite the dumpster fire we anticipated."
