Rotten Tomatoes Score: 43% (5.7/10) Box Office: At a cost of $7 million, Freeheld bombed with audiences, grossing just $496,696 to date. The Verdict: It's hard to argue against the noble intentions of a film championing the rights of a lesbian attempting to pass her pension rights onto her civil partner, but given the considerable Oscar hype leading up to its release, it's also difficult to deny that Freeheld is a fair disappointment. Yes, Julianne Moore gives another stonking performance and Ellen Page isn't far behind, but they're both trapped in an overly simplistic film that feels like it belongs on the Lifetime network: it's blandly shot and lacks the necessary emotional punch it's going for. Certainly not terrible, but this one owed itself, its subject and its audience to be so much better.
