Another year with a shock winner, 2018 saw the sweet but unimaginative drama Green Book scoop Best Picture, despite competing with the likes of A Star Is Born, BlacKkKlansman, and Roma, the latter of which should have won without trouble.
A semi-autobiographical passion project of director Alfonso Cuarón, Roma tells the story of a housekeeper who works for a middle-class Mexican family. Before the Oscars, it seemed destined to win the night's top honour, before suffering defeat at the hands of a derivative drama.
Roma is beautiful and personal, so much so that you can almost feel Cuarón putting everything he has onto the screen. It's destined to go down as a classic, whilst Green Book is already being forgotten.
