16. Good Boy

Of all the surprise hit horror films to emerge over the past year, few have proven more unexpected than Good Boy - a 70-minute film with a dog as its protagonist, produced for just $70,000, which went on to gross almost $9 million globally.

The film became a viral phenomenon largely on account of its adorable canine protagonist, Indy, and while many expressed initial reluctance to watch it in case he died at the end, that was ultimately the last thing they should've been worrying about.

Good Boy's devastatingly sad climactic twist is that Indy's terminally ill owner, Todd (Shane Jensen), is actually the one who dies, Indy unable to save him and then left in the care of Todd's sister Vera (Arielle Friedman).

Between this emotional gut-punch and the rather threadbare nature of its storytelling, Good Boy just isn't a film many will be compelled to revisit. It's a fun novelty and and an interesting, well-executed experiment, but an absolute one-off.
