17. Bring Her Back
Danny and Michael Philippou's second feature Bring Her Back is pretty much the furthest thing imaginable from a complacent sophomore effort, retaining the hard-edged nastiness that made their debut Talk to Me such a pleasant surprise.
But Bring Her Back is also a grimmer, sadder film in basically every respect - a film so aggressively oppressive that you'll probably not want to step back into its world anytime soon, if ever.
This tale, of a bereaved mother (Sally Hawkins) seeking to bring her daughter back from the dead by any means necessary, leaves such a bruising, lasting impact on a single viewing, though, that it'll probably stick with you for years afterwards.
There are so many images in the this film sure to sear themselves into your brain forever more, and much as you'll likely respect the incredible performances and phenomenal craft on offer, going back to this deeply upsetting story is a lot.
