4. The Script Is Messy & Convoluted
By far the most surprising disappointment about this movie is how hit-and-miss Taylor Sheridan's script is. Given the terrific screenplays he's written previously, this felt nowhere near as water-tight and far more keen to rely on contrived plot mechanics.
For starters, the narrative is frequently propelled forward by convenient events and character interactions, without which the entire movie would basically fall apart.
The main issue is with the central kidnapping narrative focused around Isabela Reyes (Isabela Moner), the daughter of a drug lord. She's pushed and pulled in so many directions over the course of the movie that it becomes borderline comical by act three, and the film doesn't sufficiently explain why that had to be the case at all.
It hurts to say this about a Sicario movie, but you'll honestly have a far better time with it if you just switch your brain off and accept the silliness for what it is.
