Sonic The Hedgehog Review: 6 Ups & 4 Downs

2. The Totally Generic Plot

Adapting the Sonic the Hedgehog games into a live-action movie was always going to be extremely challenging from a narrative perspective, and so writers Pat Casey and Josh Miller have basically decided to de-emphasise the plot almost entirely while instead focusing on characters, jokes, and action.

The plot is, to be totally honest, complete nonsense, with the focal road trip bromance between Sonic and Tom set in motion after Sonic oh-so-conveniently drops his rings through a portal, causing them to land on top of a skyscraper in San Francisco. And so, a road trip ensues.

Dr. Robotnik is meanwhile drafted into the story totally out of nowhere by the U.S. government, and while there's virtually no nuance or intrigue to either of these main plots, at least the film doesn't bombard the viewer with heaps of over-written narrative and keeps it unpretentiously simple.

Even then, though, the story feels like first draft filler which probably could've been fleshed out a tad before shooting started, no?
