Sonic The Hedgehog Review: 6 Ups & 4 Downs
1. The Hit-And-Miss Humour
Though Sonic is certainly a fun movie, its sense of humour is juvenile and scattershot enough that it doesn't always land.
For starters, a lot of the incessant pop-culture referencing is going to feel colossally dated a few years from now, and some of the occasional toilet humour just feels insanely low-effort, even for a freaking Sonic movie of all things.
Sure, this is a film aimed primary at children, but even so, the gag-rate is a little spotty at times, settling for the easy, obvious joke when it's clear that something far smarter and more inventive was definitely possible.
When Sonic shows up in a bathrobe and rips a fart, for instance, the kids are sure to love it, while the grown-ups will probably be left groaning.
Sonic the Hedgehog has plenty of issues, then, but they're ultimately outweighed by the unexpected array of positives. Here's everything it gets right...
