6. Star Trek 3 To Right The Wrongs Of Star Trek Into Darkness
On to Robert Orci's Star Trek 3 (or 13 for the purists) and like Day Of The Doctor, this needs to be the crowning jewel in the celebrations, Unfortunately, while audiences reacted positively to the first Star Trek reboot (lens flare aside), its sequel Star Trek Into Darkness presented many, many problems that set fans teeth on edge. While the destruction of Vulcan may have been a bold choice first time round, creating a twist on the most iconic Star Trek film of all - The Wrath Of Khan - simply went too far. Not only was it too early to revisit this villain but an attempt to play homage to Spock's classic death scene went over the top. From Spock's all-too-emotional Khaaaaaaaan to magic blood that can resurrect the dead, what may have been intended as a clever homage verged on ridiculous. Add in Carol Marcus's bizarre change of career and a sudden teleportation that can take you half way across the quadrant in one foul swoop and Star Trek continuity was screwed up completely. The truth is, as much as the third rebooted Star Trek needs to be its own film - and a fitting story for the 50th celebrations - it also needs to redress some of the issues its predecessor created. It's a problem that we're hope Orci can address. One thing is for sure, fans are not going to be so forgiving a third time round, especially when the impact of the 50th anniversary makes expectations impossibly high.
