In the late 24th century, the planet Coppelius found itself under imminent threat from a Romulan Armada, led by 'Commodore' Oh. The planet was the home of a group of synthetic life forms, spawned from the design of Data and other Soong Type androids. As synthetic life was seen as a great threat to existence at that point, the Romulans prepared to sterilise the planet's surface.

At the last moment, the USS Zheng He, commanded by acting-Captain Riker, arrived with a fleet of other Inquiry class vessels at its back. Described by Riker as 'the fastest, toughest ship Starfleet has ever put into service', this fleet was more than capable of holding its own against the Romulans, should the need arise.

Thankfully, the Romulans saw sense and tucked tail. Though the Inquiry class has only been seen briefly so far, it was a strong example of Starfleet's future.
