The Admiral who always knows when it's a trap, Admiral Ackbar has to be the main military character on the Republic side in Abrams' upcoming series. In the expanded universe, Admiral Ackbar goes on to spearhead the Rebel Alliance's push towards Coruscant and continues to lead the New Republic Military for nearly two decades. While the expanded universe is likely being thrown out the window, Admiral Ackbar hopefully will continue to be a central character in the next few movies, as there's no real reason to bring in a replacement character when he remains so popular in the nerd world. Admiral Ackbar gives the Rebel Alliance a more diverse feel character wise and he should get a chance to lead at least one big space battle sometime during the trilogy; maybe this time he can be the one who sets a trap.
