There was some initial shock from fans when it was discovered that John Boyega was to be the first black actor to play a stormtrooper, almost as though it had long been assumed the Empire was picky when it came to hiring people to oppress the universe. Evidently, The Force Awakens was to bring Star Wars into the 21st century by breaking the tradition of only white men being the stars, with Boyega's Finn leading the way. To date, Boyega's most high profile role has been in Joe Cornish's Attack The Block. Though Cornish's film and The Force Awakens share genre DNA, it's safe to say Boyega's performances in each will be wildly different: where Boyega is in the latter to play a conflicted footsoldier of The First Order defecting to The Resistance, his Moses in Attack The Block can be summed up as, basically, a chav. It'll definitely be a leap from one to the other, but the controlled intensity and confidence Boyega shows in what was his debut film - when he was aged 19, no less - suggests he's a reliable man for the job of Force Awakens' co-lead.
