5. Jade Steps On A Landmine - Sirāt

Óliver Laxe's Sirāt is one of the wildest movies ever nominated for an Oscar, centred around a man, Luis (Sergi López), who goes searching for his missing daughter in the deserts of southern Morocco.

Because it's somehow not insane enough that Luis' young son Esteban (Bruno Núñez Arjona) dies in a freak car accident halfway through the movie, Laxe throws some landmines into the mix later on.

Like, literal landmines.

As Luis and the ravers he's recruited to help find his daughter continue their grim odyssey through the desert, they decide to stop, drop some drugs, and improvise a rave, because why not?

But just as one of the group, Jade (Jade Oukid), gives herself over to the vibe, she's suddenly killed when she steps on a landmine out of nowhere.

It's a total gear-shift moment for the movie and kicks off a gut-wrenchingly tense sequence as Luis and the other survivors attempt to escape the minefield they've found themselves trapped within.
