4. Fox McCloud's Role - The Super Mario Galaxy Movie

Now in fairness, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie's own animation studio, Illumination, actually spoiled this surprise about a week before the film came out, but if you're not terminally online - heaven help you - there's a good chance you had no idea Star Fox's Fox McCloud was going to be in it.

The beloved space pilot rocks up to help the heroes in a supporting role, and better yet, he's quite aptly voiced by the ever-dashing Glen Powell.

Between the film nailing the look and vibe of the character from the games and Powell's cock-sure vocal performance, Fox's appearance is a genuine moment of fist-pumping fan-service that really works.

And with a mid-credits scene showing Fox setting off on his own adventure, it's easy to assume that this was all teeing up a Star Fox spin-off movie. 

As cynical as it all could feel, Fox McCloud's superb showing here makes it a tough proposition to resist.
