20 Recent Movies You Had NO IDEA Were Box Office Hits
17. I Know What You Did Last Summer
The discourse surrounding the recent I Know What You Did Last Summer "requel" was so thoroughly dominated by how terrible it was that many seemingly assumed it was also a commercial dud.
But the legacy slasher sequel actually grossed $64.8 million against a tight $18 million budget, making it an easy success.
While this made it the lowest-grossing of the series' three theatrical films to date, the disciplined budget helped it out immeasurably.
Sure, Sony would've probably liked a breakout on the level of 2022's Scream requel, which made $138.8 million on a similar budget, but considering how poorly received this film was by both critics and die-hard fans, the fact it made its budget back several times over is an undeniable achievement.
Whether this performance will be enough for Sony to immediately pursue the sequel teased at the end of the movie - which will bring Brandy's Karla Wilson back into the fold - is, however, anyone's guess.
